No blackouts and very little washout make this an excellent capture; some heads on the sides of the frame during the first act, but they are worked around well so they're hardly noticeable. The second act is unobstructed. It's filmed in 16:9 with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups, and the sound excellent as usual. Includes curtain call. 2 DVDs

The Last Five Years
New Haven, Connecticut -- May 24, 2014
Cathy: Katie Rose Clarke, Jamie: Adam Halpin.
A near perfect capture, shot fairly close to the stage so the picture is extra clear and steady with no washout whatsoever. There are a couple heads that can be seen at the bottom of the screen occasionally, but they never block the action. There are a couple very quick dropouts in the first three minutes. The sound is excellent as usual. It’s filmed in 16:9 with mostly mediums and close-ups, and a few wides here and there. Includes curtain call.

The Last Five Years
San Francisco, CA -- May 14, 2016
Zak Resnick (Jamie), Margo Seibert (Cathy)
Sjbernly's master. A production by San Francisco's ACT. Some slight washout in a couple wider shots and there is a head that leans in occasionally, but it's worked around well. Filmed in 16:9, in mostly mediums and close-ups, with the occasionally wider shot. Includes curtain call.

The Last Five Years

La Mirada -- February 4, 2017

Devin Archer, Natalie Storrs.

Notes: A solid regional production of this lovely show in La Mirada. Devin and Natalie each have their own unique take on the characters and the music. This is very well captured overall with no washout and no major blackouts. There are some heads that block the front part of the stage, but they are worked around fine and only really block the action during a few seconds of See, I’m Smiling. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent. Includes curtain call and playbill scans.

The video is shot from back central stalls. The action is followed embarrassingly well, using a mix of various shots as appropriate. There is minimal head obstruction in the bottom right of the screen, noticeable only in the wider shots. There is also some obstruction from the overhang, which gets in the way in the few scenes happening at the very top of the barricade. As this is a tricky show to film lighting-wise, there are some parts that are a tad too dark or bright, but overall the colors are a faithful representation of the ones on the stage. Full video asides from these scenes: first half of At the End of the Day, At the Barricade, Every Day/A Heart Full of Love (Reprise).

There is also a little more washout than in most of my videos, especially in the full stage shots. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent. NOTE: Act 1 shot from the balcony so the famous Kerr Balcony bar obstructs the bottom of the stage but I did my best to shoot around that. Act 2 from the mezz so no stage obstructions at all.

Macbeth
Broadway -- May 6, 2013
Alan Cumming, Jenny Sterlin, Brendan Titley, Chris Kipiniak
Commentary: Phenomenal show with an innovative take on the classic play, and Alan Cumming gives an amazing performance. A few blackouts (seconds long) and moments of wandering, but mostly its really well-shot and steady and unobstructed. About a half hour of silent footage of the ORIGINAL cast of Mame from 1966! The is an amazing find and has the only known footage of Bea Arthur in the role of Vera Charles! Includes: "It's Today", "The Man In The Moon", "Mame" (almost the complete number!), "Bosom Buddies", "That's How Young I Feel", "If He Walked Into My Life." Great HD recording. There is a quite a bit of head obstruction, however they are shot around pretty well most of the time. Unfortunately, the camera is zoomed in most of the time, even during the dances, so you often don't see much of the stage. 2 DVDs

Mamma Mia
Palladium Theater, Stuttgart -- August, 2013

Notes from Master: The video is filmed from central stalls and features a completely unobstructed view of the stage. The action is followed all too well (I've seen this show... a fair few times) using a variety of shots as needed. The filming is steady and the colors great - all in all, as good a video as a bootleg can possibly get.

Notes from Master: Filmed from stalls in good quality, some shakiness in the beginning of both acts. Many obstructions due to heads and the seat in front, but with nice close-ups. Including curtain call and encores.

Stuttgart, Germany -- January 5, 2014

There are some head obstructions. That being said, the heads don't cover the centre of the stage. Act 1 is complete, but act 2 ends at the beginning of the Dancing Queen encore. This was because the ushers had already told another person in the auditorium to stop filming.

The video here is captured very well with no washout or no obstruction. Jennifer Nettles, Dove Cameron, Tisha Campbell-Martin, Lea DeLaria, Jaime Camil, Steven Weber, Hamish Linklater, Corbin Bleu, Charlotte Mary Wen, Tiana Okoye, Rodd Farhadi, Payson Lewis.

Master note: The annual Hollywood Bowl production never disappoints. Jennifer absolutely kills it, and there are some brilliant comedic moments from the whole cast. This capture is nearly perfect with just a couple quick dropouts and some brief moments where the video wanders or goes out of focus, but never for more than a few seconds. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent. Includes curtain call, encores, and playbill scans. Overall Rating: A (2 Discs)

A great video of the recently opened Vienna production of Mary Poppins. The show, which uses the US tour staging here (fold-out house, "Playing the Game"), is as charming as ever and the production is an excellent one. The video is shot from the circle with no obstructions and an excellent view of the stage. It follows the action very well and captures both the big numbers and the more intimate moments in the best way possible. Missing the second half of "Let's Go Fly a Kite". 2 DVDs

The Mystery of Edwin Drood
Broadway -- January 26, 1986
Betty Buckley, Cleo Laine, George Rose, Howard McGillin, John Herrera, Donna Murphy
Quality/Notes: A quite good video, especially considering it's from 1986. Shot from the balcony, stage right. Not many close-ups, but good "full body" 2-3 character medium shots throughout with wide shots for large production numbers. The filmer seems to know the show and follows the action well. Some commentary and reviews from various news programs are included. Audio is clear while the video is a little fuzzy.

Lanelle's master: Takes about a minute at the start of each act to settle into it, some shakiness between scenes but mostly well-filmed. c. Blackout when the house lights were on for voting. Includes curtain call and emotional speeches by Scott Ellis and Rupert Holmes, well these are a little shaky and obstructed, but they are there.

The Nance
Broadway -- May 11, 2013
Nathan Lane (Chauncey), Jonny Orsini (Ned), Lewis J Stadlen (Efram), Cady Huffman (Sylvie), Jenni Barber (Joan), Andrea Burns (Carmen)
Commentary: Nathan Lane is just fantastic in this witty play. The first act is filmed from the side, so there’s a bar in the way sometimes and stage left is blocked, and it is slightly more shaky than usual. Great close-ups though. The second act is much better, steady and unobstructed. 2 DVDs

Fantastic and powerful performances from the whole cast; nicely captured as can be expected from this show. There are several set pieces that obstruct the view of the action in certain places; about fourteen minutes of blackouts: most of the first seven minutes of act one, one and a half minutes of The Private and Intimate Life of the House, one minute of The Ball, three minutes of Balaga, one minute of The Abduction, and a couple other quick dropouts. Excellent clear sound 2 DVDs B+

NEWSical the Musical
Off-Broadway -- October 14, 2012
Christina Bianco, Christine Pedi, Michael West, Tommy Walker, Susan Mosher
Brilliantly funny political and news satire show with musical numbs and sketches covering everything from Republican primaries to Katie Holmes to an almost naked Prince Harry. This is not very well filmed, shot through some heads but it is a small theatre so you still get a very good sense of what is going on. The last 20 minutes are mostly audio only.

Notes from master: First two minutes is out of focus and missing a few seconds. It’s mostly well shot, but there’s some shakiness/wandering during applause and a small blackout after Seize the Day. Nice closeups and wide-shots for the choreography.  Includes curtain call. 2 DVDs

Newsies
Broadway -- August 23, 2014
Jack Kelly: Corey Cott, Katherine Plummer: Liana Hunt, Davey: Ben Fankhauser, Crutchie: Andy Richardson, Joseph Pulitzer: John Dossett, Medda Larkin: Capathia Jenkins
This was the second to last performance on Broadway and the last performance open to the public. The energy from the cast and audience is palpable. There are entrance applauses for everyone, as well as for some of the greatest lines in the show, and a standing ovation for Seize the Day before the first act was even over. Definitely a must-see for any fan of the show. Act one has a few issues, but act two is much better. There is a one-minute blackout during Santa Fe (prologue). Carrying the Banner and the following scene in Newsie Square alternate between being blacked out or severely obstructed by a railing. There is a six-minute blackout from about halfway through The World Will Know through the scene at Jacobi’s Deli. Act two only has a two-minute blackout for the first scene, and a one-minute blackout during King of New York. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent. Includes curtain call and playbill scans. 2 DVDs

Amazing performance and great filming. Almost the full show (Missing the Make Up Your Minds and A Light in the Dark). Other than that, full and what is captured is captured great. First 5 minutes are "iffy" due to a friend wanting to see if they could film... turns out, they couldn't. A bit of spotlight washout, but it doesn't take away from a powerful performance. Ripley was in top notch condition this show.

Closing performance of the tour; filmed in 16:9 widescreen. No obstructions, only one blackout in Act One due to late-comers, and a very brief one in Act Two due to a glitch in the video that had to get cut out. Steady filming with a good mix of close-ups and medium zooms for ensemble action on the very large set. External audio fed in from MD source so it is clear. Overall, a very solid cast and excellent performances all-around. Judy McLane especially stood out as Diana, as did Jonathan Rayson as Dan.

Lanelle’s Master:  Simpler, but more intimate production than the Broadway version with a lot of heart (and some reinterpretation). This is NOT filmed as well as my other shows. The full show is there, but with a lot of head obstructions and wandering and some blackouts. I'd say around 50% of the show is well filmed. I'm just putting this out there for next to normal fans or obsessive collectors.

Note: The video is filmed from the mezzanine. There is some head obstruction in the bottom of the screen, which is filmed around effectively. The action is followed very well, using a combination of closeups and wider shots as necessary. Due to latecomers, the video starts at "Everything Else" (which will prove handy in distinguishing it from another released capture of this production, which includes "Just Another Day" but is missing the first 10 minutes of Act 2) DorrarPlantage's master

Very well captured with no washout and just a few couple quick dropouts. There is a railing that blocks the actors when they come down into the audience or sit on the edge of the stage; the obstruction is worked around as much as possible, and it’s much better in act two. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent. Includes curtain call and playbill scans. (2 DISCS)

Notes: A great capture of this rarely performed musical with emotional performances from the entire cast. There is one head that obstructs the actors feet on the left side of the stage, but it generally doesn’t affect the action and it gets better after the opening number. There is no washout and just a couple quick dropouts. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent. The show is one act on one disc. A capture of the show before they made changes this summer; the show is great fun and the acrobatics are incredible. Both Jeremy and Ruby are fantastic. Nicely capture with just a couple quick dropouts. There are some small heads on the bottom that occasionally block the actors’ feet, but generally don’t affect the overall action. There is a bit of washout, especially in wider shots. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups; there are more wides than usual to capture the acrobatics and projections. The sound is excellent. Includes curtain call, encore, and brochure scans. 2 DISCS

Patti LuPone and Seth Rudetsky: Broadway @ The Art House
Provincetown, MA -- July 4 & July 5, 2012
Patti LuPone makes her Art House debut with Seth Rudetsky at the piano. This show was part of a series of 10 unrehearsed shows produced and hosted by Seth which featured him asking a series of questions of his guests (other shows included Audra McDonald, Betty Buckley, Andrea Martin, Judy Kuhn, Alice Ripley, and Meghan Mullally), then running to the piano to illustrate a point, or just an excuse for the guest to sing a song. Patti had no idea what he would ask, or what she would be asked to sing. This disc was edited from 4 shows they did together and highlights the best of the best. Filmed using multiple cameras.

The final performance of Phantom's Third National Tour, the longest running tour in US history; first 20 minutes of the show has about 8 minutes of scattered blackouts with the last one in the middle of Christine's Think of Me, and then the show is intact after that; a head on either side that blocks the far sides of the stage; they do obstruct the action occasionally, especially in the first act, but worked around as much as possible. Some washout here and there, but nothing terrible. Filmed with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups; excellent sound, Includes curtaincall and speeches by Tim Martin Gleason and Andrew Lloyd Webber. 2 DVDs

Hugh Panaro (Phantom), Samantha Hill (Christine), Kyle Barisch (Raoul), Michele McConnell (Carlotta), Jim Weitzer (Andre), Tim Jerome (Firmin), Ellen Harvey (Giry), Christian Sebek (Piangi), Kara Klein (Meg Giry)
Commentary: This was filmed after the November cast change, with a new Christine alternate. Small flub where Christine did not quite manage to remove Phantom's hood. Prologue has quite a few blackouts, and another small blackout in act 2 when Madame Giry confesses to Raoul (all due to late seating), but otherwise very clear and unobstructed. Complete show including curtain call and BCEFA speech. I don't know why I film the best (quality wise) in phantom, but this show is well shot - tightly focused and very steady.

Sierra Bogges and Norm Lewis
Sierra Bogges and Norm Lewis's first together. A fantastic capture of the new cast on Broadway. Norm is the first black Phantom - and is just amazing. His acting is very good (and will hopefully improve) and his vocals do not disappoint. Sierra is at her best. She is just a great actress (which is very rare for a Christine, they are usually just awful and bland) and has a beautiful soprano. Shot from the mezz, with minimal head obstruction. A

Excellent capture of this year's Hollywood Bowl production. Three songs were cut from the production: "Never Say Good Luck on Opening Night", "Where Did We Go Right?", and "Betrayed"; stage is filmed directly, not the screens, so the action is followed well with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The first minute of the show is missing, and the next few minutes are a bit shaky with scattered blackouts, but after "The King of Broadway" it settles and the majority of the show is captured nicely, filmed in 16:9, and the sound excellent; includes curtain call. 2 DVDs

RENT
Hollywood Bowl -- August 6, 2010
Aaron Tveit, Skylar Astin, Vanessa Hudgens, Tracie Thoms, Nicole Scherzinger, Wayne Brady, Telly Leung
Filmed with a mix wides, mediums, and close-ups, with no blackouts whatsoever; the stage is filmed directly, not the screens, except for a couple times when the screens were showing different footage than what was happening live on stage. There is some washout here and there, especially in the wides. This was filmed on a tripod so it's fairly steady, but it does get a big shaky or jerky in places, especially when zoomed in. The crowd was so enthusiastic that their screams occasionally overload the audio, but other than that, the sound is excellent. 2 DVDs
